Fishing for bass in Hawaii is an amazing experience and I recently had the opportunity to try my luck at catching these majestic fish, and it was worth every second.

The inviting waters and varied landscape give anglers lots of options when it comes to techniques and styles. Whether you’re into fly-fishing or deep-sea trolling, it’s easy to see why Hawaii is quickly becoming the go-to destination for bass fishing.

Hawaii offers plenty of varieties of bass, including largemouths, smallmouths, striped, and spotted bass. With its crystal clear waters and diverse topography, it’s no surprise that more and more anglers are flocking here for their next fishing trip.

Peacock Bass Species

Did you know that Hawaii and Florida are the only states in the USA where you can find peacock bass?

Peacock bass are mostly found in multiple basins throughout the Amazon, Orinoco, and Guianas rivers. They tend to weigh around 13 kg and reach up to 1 m in length. These freshwater creatures are diurnal, meaning they feed during the day, which makes them perfect targets for sport fishing. Peacock bass also make great food fish as well as aquarium pets, if you happen to catch one large enough or have access to larger tanks.

Smallmouth Bass in Hawaii

Smallmouth bass is a popular choice among fishers in Hawaii. Known for their impressive fight and delicious taste, these unique creatures boast an elongated green body, red eyes, and dark brown stripes. Adult smallmouths typically measure between 30 – 50 cm long.

These fish live in lakes and streams with rocky or gravel bottoms. They prefer clear water plus natural cover like ledges and vegetation. As far as food, they feed on crustaceans, insects and smaller fish – usually when the temperature is higher than 60°F.

4. Lifespan of 10-12 years.
